Recommendations from Professional OrganizationsThis guide provides a list of links to a variety of ALA's literature award winners and notable reading lists for all ages, and is offered as a source of reading guidance. Please be sure to consult your school or public librarian for additional lists of non-ALA award winners and recommended books.
Click on the tabs for Award Winners, Children, YA/Teens, and Diversity Each year a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's books. According to the Notables Criteria, "notable" is defined as: Worthy of note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding. As applied to children's books, notable should be thought to include books of especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for all age levels (birth through age 14) that reflect and encourage children's interests in exemplary ways.
The books on these lists are to help inspire conversations with children going through challenging situations like the death of a loved one, an unexpected move, natural disasters and more. They are available for grades K-2nd, 3rd-5th and 6th-8th. Resources for adults are also included.
The Reading Beyond book lists are comprised of 25 titles in three age categories. These books were evaluated by the ALA member librarians of the committee and were chosen for their content, quality, and variety of genre and format.
Use these lists from NEA and Colorin Colorado to connect children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures and spread the joy of reading.
These are a few titles curated by School Library Journal. Please email Mrs. Parks if help is needed with the link.
