Battle of the Books is a voluntary, school wide team reading competition open to all 5 – 8th grade students at Meigs.
This program was started in 2010 by a group of MNPS middle school librarians: Gina Wiser (AKA BOB matriarch), Amanda Tucker-Dye, Laura Youmans, Alison Maliszewski Brooks and Reeta Parks, to encourage students to read a variety of genres and to have fun "battling" over the books in a quiz bowl type format. Presently, ten librarians from MNPS middle school libraries and Nashville Public Library comprise the committee that selects 20 books for the yearly battle, oversees the reading competition, and develops questions used for the school and district battles.
At each school, students interested in reading and competing will be on a team with 4-5 other students. Each student on a team will read a minimum of 4 books and will develop 10 trivia-type questions for each book read. After state testing in the spring, we will have a school level competition to determine the winning team (the team that answers the most questions correctly) to represent Meigs. The winning team from Meigs will compete with other MNPS middle schools in a virtual tournament sponsored by the Nashville Public Library to determine the championship team for the district! Our district competition is in May each year.
While in virtual school, we will meet on Teams a minimum of once monthly to discuss the books, check progress, and practice battling. Some meetings may be held after school hours. Reading the minimum number of books, submitting questions and attending meetings are required to participate in BOB. All books will be provided by the library, thanks to funding by Limitless Libraries.
In order to participate, please complete the survey posted in the 2020-2021 booklist!
